EARLY SETTLERS OF SANGAMON COUNTY - 1876

These biographies were submitted by a researcher and evidently abstracted from the 1876 History of Sangamon County, IL. Errors could occur, so one should always verify the correctness by obtaining copies of vitals and performing all necessary research to document what is contained herein.




OVERSTREET, DABNEY, brother to John, was born about 1786 in Bedford county, Va., and married in Greenbrier county to Jennie Rogers. They had seven children in Virginia, and moved to Sangamon county, Ill., arriving in 1830, where seven children were born. Of their children, I can give the sketches of two, only--

NELLIE, born in Virginia, married in Illinois to Jesse G. Hurt. They had eleven children, and she died. Mr. Hurt and the children live near Athens, Menard county, Illinois.

JOHN, born Oct. 10, 1819, in Cabell county, West Virginia, married May 11, 1839, in Sangamon county, to Rachel Cantrall. They had four living children. LOUISA J., born May 11, 1841, in Sangamon county, married Henry F. Shepherd. See his name. JAMES W., born Feb. 5, 1844, married Mrs. Martha E. Dunlap. She had one child by her first marriage, JANE DUNLAP. They had three children, JENNIE, MARY and NELLIE--and live near Cantrall. ELIZABETH A., born June 13, 1848, married Dec. 5, 1866, to Sebastian B. Shepherd. See his name. JOHN T., born Nov. 15, 1851, married Dec. 24, 1872, to Maggie Brenan, and live in Ford county, Illinois. John Overstreet and wife reside two miles north of Cantrall, Sangamon county, Illinois--1874.
