EARLY SETTLERS OF SANGAMON COUNTY - 1876

These biographies were submitted by a researcher and evidently abstracted from the 1876 History of Sangamon County, IL. Errors could occur, so one should always verify the correctness by obtaining copies of vitals and performing all necessary research to document what is contained herein.




SAYRE, JOHN, was born Oct. 12, 1762, near Bridgeton, Cumberland county, New Jersey, and was married there, August 20, 1792, to Catherine Teel, who was born May 3, 1774, near Bridgeton, also. They had eleven children in New Jersey, and the family moved to Green county, near Xenia, Ohio, in 1822, and from there to Sangamon county, Ill., arriving in the fall of 1834, in what is now Cartwright township, south of Richland Creek. Of their children -

John, Jun., born July 18, 1795, in New Jersey, was married in Ohio to Nancy Maxwell. They had three children. He came on a visit to his relations and died Dec. 31, 1870, in Springfield. He was buried in Cartwright township, and his two daughters are both married. One lives in Iowa and the other in Missouri.

David, born August 2, 1797, was married in New Jersey, and never moved west.

Margaret, born Feb. 22, 1800, near Bridgeton, Cumberland county, N.H., was married there to Constantine Foster. See his name.

Thomas, born Dec. 14, 1802, in Cape May county, N.J., married in Sangamon county, June 23, 1836, to Effie Waggoner. They had eight living children - John, born Jan. 11, 1838, died unmarried, oct. 7, 1865. Mary Arminda, born Nov. 1, 1839, married William T. Pirkins. See his name. James T. born June 6, 1841, and George W. born Aug. 11, 1843, lives with their mother. Eliza Jane, born Oct. 4, 1847, married Aug. 10, 1871, to James W. Shoup, who was born July, 1846, in New York city. They live near Richland Station. Charles C., Ann E., and Margaret E. live with their mother. Thomas Sayre died jan. 23, 1861, and his widow resides now (1876) on the farm where he settled on coming to the county. It is two and a half miles northeast of Richland Station, Sangamon county, Ill.

Eliza, born August 26, 1806, in New Jersey; was married in Sangamon county to Rolla Morgan. They had eight children, moved to Iowa, and Mrs. Morgan died there. The family started over the plains, and Mr. Morgan and one of the children died on the road. The others continued their journey, and reside in Portland, Oregon.

Foster, born July 8, 1809, in New Jersey, died in Ohio, July 22, 1836, from injuries received in a well.

Edmond, born Dec. 2, 1812, in New Jersey, is unmarried, and lives in Cartwright township, Sangamon county, Ill., now, 1876.

Mary, born June 16, 1814, near Bridgeton, new Jersey, was married Sept. 15, 1842, in Sangamon county, Ill., to John H. Beaumont. They had one living child, Fannie, who married Dr. Harrison Withrow. See his name. They live in Petersburg, Ill. Mr. Beaumont died May 3, 1870, at Pleasant Plains, Sangamon county, and his widow lives at Petersburg, Menard county, Ill.

Clarissa, born Oct. 31, 1816, in New Jersey, was married in Sangamon county, Ill., to Jordan Simpson. See his name.

Mrs. Catherine Sayre died Sept. 18, 1835, and John Sayre died Dec. 27, 1835, both near Richland creek, Sangamon County, Ill.
