WILLIAM J. CONKLING was born in New York City in 1826; emigrated to Ohio in 1831 and to McLean county, Illinois in 1839. Attended Oberlin College for a time, but left in his junior year. Came to Springfield in 1853, read law for two years and was admitted to the Bar. For some years he had a lucrative practice, but of late years he has devoted himself more to the real estate business.
