Arthur M. Fitzgerald, who is filling the position of city attorney, is one of the native sons of Springfield, whose life history stands in contradistinction to the old adage that a prophet is not without honor save in his own country, for here where his entire life has passed, he has so directed his efforts that he has won the respect and confidence of his fellow men, who have bestowed upon him public office and with signal consistency it may be said that he is one of the representative young men of Springfield. His parents are James and Nora M. Fitzgerald, who are represented elsewhere in this work. Mr. Fitzgerald, of this review, began his education in Springfield, afterward continued his studies at Orchard Lake and then entered the University of Michigan at Ann Arbor, being graduated with the law class of 1902. After completing his course there he began practice in Springfield and he is a member of the Sangamon County Bar Association. He was elected on the Democratic ticket to the position of city attorney and is now acting in that capacity.
On the 21st of October, 1902, Mr. Fitzgerald was united in marriage to Miss Ann Dickenson Grout, the eldest child and only daughter of Joseph Merriam Grout, who was a lawyer and died in Springfield, February 28, 1902. His widow, Mrs. Flora Grubb Grout, was a daughter of Samuel and Elizabeth (Drennen) Grubb. The former, born March 18, 1827, is now deceased. The latter, born in 1833, is still living in her seventy-first years and makes her home with her granddaughter Mrs. Fitzgerald a part of the time and during the remainder of the time with her son Samuel Grubb of Chicago. She possesses a very retentive memory and relates many interesting incidents of pioneer days in Sangamon county. Mr. Fitzgerald is a member of the Benevolent and Protective Order of Elks. He and his wife are well known in the social circles of the city and have many friends here. He has become recognized as a strong factor in Democratic circles and in his practice has demonstrated the possession of legal talent of high order.
