TIME LINE FOR SANGAMON COUNTY ILLINOIS


The location of what is now Sangamon County went through many boundary changes in almost 200 years. Researchers, for example, would want to search in St. Clair County 1790-1812, in Madison County 1812-1816, and in Madison and Bond Counties 1817-1821 Your ancestor could have came to the Northwest Territory, Indiana Territory, Illinois Territory, although settlements were sparse in that time era, mostly along the waterways, such as Mississippi River, Illinois River, etc. until the early 1800's.
This table is to be used as a guideline for your research project, to be aware of the County boundary changes.

State of Illinois, Sangamon County formed. County boundaries then included the present day Counties of Scott; Morgan; Cass; Menard; Mason; Tazewell; Logan; parts of Christian; Woodford; Macon; Marshall; McLean; and Putnam.

31 January 1823

Morgan County formed/taken away from Sangamon County. Morgan included present day Counties of Scott; Cass and Morgan.

23 December 1825

Peoria County formed taking away Mason; Tazewell; and parts of McLean; Woodford; Marshall; and Putnam from Sangamon County

1839

Menard, Logan and Dane Counties (later Christian) formed from Sangamon, with parts of eastern edge of Sangamon being added to Macon County.
Sangamon County is now composed as it is today.
