EARLY SETTLERS OF SANGAMON COUNTY - 1876

These biographies were submitted by a researcher and evidently abstracted from the 1876 History of Sangamon County, IL. Errors could occur, so one should always verify the correctness by obtaining copies of vitals and performing all necessary research to document what is contained herein.




BETTIS, JAMES H., was born Oct. 18, 1811, in Lincoln county, Ky. His parents moved to Hamilton county, O., in 1818. James H. came to Sangamon county in 1839. He was married July 28, 1844, in what is now Auburn township, to Elizabeth Fletcher. They had six children in Sangamon county, and in 1855 moved to Missouri. In 1864 they moved back to Sangamon county. Of their children--

OLIVER F., born in Sangamon county, married June 20, 1866, to Jane Patterson. They reside in Auburn township.

REBECCA J., born in Sangamon county, married Franklin Nicholson, and reside near Virden.

JAMES W., MARTHA E., NANCY A. and JOHN R., the four latter reside with their parents in Auburn township.

The parents of J. H. Bettis moved from Ohio to DeWitt county, Ill., before he came to the State. After his father's death, his mother came to Sangamon county, in 1842, and died in 1850. She was born in Garrard county, Ky., in 1780, and is believed to have been the first white child born in that county.
