EARLY SETTLERS OF SANGAMON COUNTY - 1876

These biographies were submitted by a researcher and evidently abstracted from the 1876 History of Sangamon County, IL. Errors could occur, so one should always verify the correctness by obtaining copies of vitals and performing all necessary research to document what is contained herein.




GELLING, JOHN, was born Nov. 13, 1805, in the city of Douglas, Isle of Man, and came to America in 1830. He landed at New York, and went to the vicinity of Morristown, N. J. Hannah Monson was born in 1797, near Morristown, N. J. She was of an old French family that was among the earliest settlers of New Jersey. John Gelling and Hannah Monson were married June 23, 1833, near Morristown. They moved in 1838 to Vevay, Switzerland county, Ind. Mr. Gelling, his wife, and a girl living in the family, started from Vevay in a wagon, and drove through Indianapolis to Springfield, arriving in October, 1839. Since that time he has resided four years in Morgan county. With that exception, he has been in Sangamon county to the present time. They never had any children. Mrs. Hannah Gelling died Dec. 30, 1872, and John Gelling resides two and a half miles south of Dawson.

Miss Ellen C. Gelling, sister to John Gelling, resides with him. She was born on the Isle of Man, and came to Sangamon county in 1852.

Robert Gelling, brother to John and Ellen C., born in 1809 on the Isle of Man, and married there, came to Sangamon county in 1855. He has two sons and two daughters, and resides two miles south of Dawson.
